Does Jack Ma need to suck up to Malaysia? If not, then what he says is neutral and worth digesting

Does Jack Ma need to suck up to Malaysia? If not, then what he says is neutral and worth digesting

Much criticisms have been levelled at the Malaysian federal government day in and day out by both local and foreigners.

The fact of life remains that no government is perfect and neither is there a perfect leader anywhere in the world.

Governments are made up of humans and are therefore imperfect and prone to making mistakes.

The unfortunate fact is that the majority of the rakyat (people) choose to only highlight and nag on the mistakes of governments. The good are often given little importance in social and public debates.

“Now, Jack Ma, China’s Alibaba Group founder and executive chairman, has exclaimed that Malaysia is ‘much more efficient than I thought’.

“I am sure political doomsayers will vehemently beg to differ with some even saying Jack Ma has lost his mind. Jack Ma is a world successful entrepreneur.

“There is no need for him to kow tow to Malaysia or its federal government. Therefore, what he says is a significant fact,” Gerakan Deputy Speaker Syed Abdul Razak Alsagoff said.

Syed Razak said what Jack Ma “is saying to Malaysians is to get on with life, be innovative and be far sighted”.

“About his best advice is this: The world is changing. Nobody is waiting for you here. Please inform your kids!”

Syed Razak, who is Gerakan’s nominee to contest N.37 Bukit Lanjan in the coming 14th General Election (GE14), said “I would go as far as saying Jack Ma is telling us to move on in life, get real don’t go on nagging on a mistake or a particular issue”.

“There are much challenges and opportunities out there, don’t just wallow in denial, don’t just be bogged down by just an issue or two.

“Go out there and tackle, grab or seize the economic opportunities, both domestic and global,” he added.

The country is also 'much more efficient than I thought', says the Alibaba Group founder and executive chairman.

KUALA LUMPUR: Alibaba Group founder and executive chairman Jack Ma has described Malaysia as an efficient and very business-friendly nation to establish digital economy collaborations.

“Many asked me why I chose Malaysia to work together on the digital free trade zone (DFTZ).

“I told them that Malaysia is very business-friendly and much more efficient than I thought,” he said in his opening speech before jointly launching the DFTZ with Prime Minister Najib Razak here today.

Ma said the Multimedia Super Corridor project inspired him to pursue the digital world idea and made Alibaba and Malaysia establish the e-hub near Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

“The DFTZ is the first digital free trade zone outside China, which will be utilising new technology to empower small businesses and young entrepreneurs.

“There will be a logistic hub to cater for the e-commerce business with a one stop service centre.

“It can grow to become a regional logistic hub that could deliver packages within 72 hours in the next 20 years.”

He was optimistic that a digital economy would help increase gross domestic product (GDP) contribution from small businesses in Malaysia to at least 80%.

Currently, small businesses in Malaysia contributed less than 40% of the nation’s GDP with small and medium-sized enterprises accounting for about 97% of total businesses. - FMT

Alibaba Group founder: It’s an honour to help Malaysia develop digital economy

http://brightcove.vo.llnwd.net/v1/uds/pd/4405352761001/201703/3033/4405352761001_5369621316001_5369613125001.mp4?pubId=4405352761001&videoId=5369613125001 (VIDEO CLIP)
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians will see Jack Ma more often in the next few years as China’s e-commerce giant plans to fulfil his responsibilities as a “good” adviser to the Malaysian Government on digital economy.

The 52-year-old founder and executive chairman of Alibaba Group made the promise during a meet-the-press session.

He will also bring more partners here to work with Malaysia. For this trip, he brought along 16 Chinese logistics companies whose businesses account for 43% of the world’s deliveries.

Ma was in Malaysia to launch Malaysia’s Digital Free Trade Zone (DFTZ) with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on Wednesday, four months after both of them had met in Beijing. He also spoke at the Global Transformation Forum (GTF) 2017 yesterday.

He said Najib had accepted his invitation to visit his hometown and Alibaba headquarters in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, before attending the Belt and Road summit in Beijing this May.

Ma considered his talk at GTF as part of his “job” as adviser to the Government.

“I hope my speech can make people start to think. If 10 people start to think differently, these people will make Malaysia different,” he said.

Asked about whether it is a paid role, Ma said: “I don’t know, I don’t think so. I don’t want this kind of pay. It is my honour.”

Alibaba Group and its affiliated firms are participating in four segments of the DFTZ, namely e-fulfilment hub, e-service platform, e-payment and financing, and e-talent development.

Under a memorandum of understanding signed, Alibaba Group’s units will work with Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd to develop a regional e-commerce and logistics hub in KLIA Aeropolis.

This will position Malaysia as a key sourcing and fulfilment hub for small and medium businesses.

The Malaysian Government has allocated a piece of land to Alibaba to set up this e-hub, which will make it easier for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia to participate in international trade.

Alibaba will also explore e-payment and financing opportunities to facilitate business-to-business trade.

Ma said he expected to launch Alipay in Malaysia soon, but stressed that it was not to occupy the local market but to push for Malaysia to be an inclusive, transparent cashless society.

It is also to enable young people to have more opportunities to trade.

On Alibaba’s ventures here, Ma said: “The Malaysian companies will belong to Malaysians, and they will be owned and operated by Malaysians.

“This is why we plan to send more Malaysians to China for training.”

On the total investment allocated by Alibaba Group for its Malaysian venture, Ma did not reveal the exact figure, but said it was about investment of commitment, talent, technology and know-how.

“What Malaysia needs is technology, the way people think and do business. We are not only working here with the Government and the people, we also work with China to open more doors to Malaysian products and young people,” he said.

Ma said Alibaba had prepared “a big fund” for the group’s Electronic World Trade Programme initiative – which the e-hub in Malaysia is a part of – but the specific amount would be decided stage by stage.

Ma, who speaks fluent English, was clearly the star attraction at GTF 2017.

At the GTF 2017 talk earlier, where attendees lined up to ask him questions, Ma elaborated on empowering young people and SMEs in this third wave of technology revolution.

He observed the people who succeed are optimistic: “They never complain.”

“When people complain, they lose opportunities. They blind their minds,” he said, using his palm to cover his eyes.

Ma’s advice to the audience is to teach culture and values to their children as with these things, “humans can always win the machine”.

“Education should focus on imagination, creativity and teamwork.

“We should teach our kids sports, music, and painting.

“If we do not change the way we educate, we are going to be in big trouble. Our kids will always complain,” he said. - The Star Online

DFTZ will be a business run by Malaysians, says Jack Ma

Bernama

Ali Baba chief says they hired and trained Malaysians in China, subsequently sending them home to ensure that the business in Malaysia is run by locals.

KUALA LUMPUR: Alibaba Group chairman Jack Ma wants the newly-launched digital free-trade zone (DFTZ) to be a Malaysian business run by Malaysians, instead of the group.

Ma said the e-hub should focus on looking for partners and empowering them.

“We want to make sure that it becomes a Malaysian business instead of Alibaba’s business, the e-hub belongs to Malaysia and should be operated by Malaysians.

“This is what we did in India and Indonesia,” he told a press conference on the sidelines of the Global Transformation Forum 2017 here yesterday.

He said this was the reason why Alibaba, China’s e-commerce giant, had hired and trained Malaysians in China, subsequently sending them home to ensure that the business in Malaysia is run by locals.

The DTFZ was launched by Prime Minister Najib Razak, together with Ma on Wednesday.

On his role as an adviser to the Malaysian government on digital economy, Ma said, he would be sharing the group’s digital knowledge during the upcoming visit by Najib and his delegation.

The prime minister was expected to visit Alibaba’s headquarters in Hangzhou, China, before attending the Belt and Road Summit on May 14, 2017.

“I think I will visit here more too,” he said.

Meanwhile, during the “Ali Baba Transformation – The Jack Ma Way” session yesterday, he expressed his confidence that online business would account for at least 90% of businesses in the next 20 to 30 years.

He said globalisation has enabled entrepreneurs to transform into “net-trepreneurs” and cater to the people’s needs.

“Those who do not use the internet would only be able to cater to a small local community instead of moving to the other side of the world,” he said.

He also urged the companies to employ more women as women were more caring and considerate, adding that more than 47% of the group’s employees were women. - FMT
